10. Jessie Buckley - The Lost Daughter
The true triumph of Maggie Gyllenhaal's harrowing psychological drama The Lost Daughter is the two performances at its centre, both of which have been recognised by the Academy.
Playing a younger version of Olivia Colman's troubled protagonist Leda, Jessie Buckley - who's been on a hot streak of phenomenal performances for a few years now - brings to life a woman unsure of her role as a mother, confused about her future, and withdrawn from her family.
It's a haunting exercise in uncertainty and heartbreak that only gets better when you contrast it with the work of Colman, both of them working off each other to create a two-dimensional character you both feel for and almost fear.
Given her meteoric rise to stardom over the last few years, it's great to see Buckley get the recognition she deserves, and it'll be even better to see where she goes next.
