Oscars 2022: Every Acting Nominee Ranked

11. Ciarán Hinds - Belfast

King Richard Will Smith
Universal

Ciarán Hinds gives the best performance in Kenneth Branagh's most personal film, playing the playful but loving Pop with dry humour and tenderness to spare.

Thanks to the great chemistry he shares with on-screen wife Judi Dench, Hinds's performance is given a touch more depth than his fellowly nominated co-star, his loyalty to his spouse, his family, and his country forming a large chunk of Belfast's emotional core.

There's something truly wonderful about the way Pop can move between teasing his wife and serenading her, and the way Hinds makes him both a towering presence of authority and a comforting figure of commitment.

At the moment, it really looks like Hinds might win the Best Supporting Actor trophy, but even if he misses out, this'll be a performance we'll be remembering with fondness for years to come.
