6. Mary Poppins Returns ($850 Million)

Mary Poppins Returns Emily Blunt
Disney

Release Date: December 25

A Christmas Day release date, the general audience fondness for Mary Poppins, some terrific casting (especially the allure of Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda) and potential awards buzz should be the perfect storm for Disney's musical sequel to become the biggest box office success of the holiday period.

Nostalgia isn't always a reliable recipe for box office gravy, but with the first teaser trailer being dropped during the Oscars, Disney's clearly committed to a long-form marketing campaign that will aggressively target both family crowds and adults who saw the original as children.

It's hard to imagine the competition putting much of a dent in it, honestly, even if this is a tough one to call an exact figure on. As such, it could easily fall a little short of or exceed the $850 million estimate.
