Predicting The Rotten Tomatoes Scores For 2016's Biggest Remaining Movies
17. Snowden (53%)
Critical Consensus: "Oliver Stone brings his usual fiery incisiveness to Snowden, but a badly miscast Joseph Gordon-Levitt and abundance of narrative cliches keep the audience at arm's length from his iconic subject."
Over the last two decades, Oliver Stone has had just two movies break 60% on Rotten Tomatoes: the 2003 documentary Commandante (62%) and 2006's World Trade Center (69%).
Stone's been stuck in a creative rut of mediocrity (with the occasional outright disaster) for a long time, and going by Snowden's trailers, it's hard to imagine this film being the one to break that.
Gordon-Levitt is a peculiar casting choice for Snowden and it looks like Stone is doubling down on sexing-up the film's technological elements with surreal, flashy visuals, which could easily backfire and make the film feel dated right out of the gate. Best to expect a so-so film and potentially be pleasantly surprised.
