Prey: 8 Easter Eggs You Might Have Missed
3. Stan Winston's Concept Art
Placing Prey in the past allowed the filmmakers to experiment with aspects of the Predator. This led to an earlier version of his cloaking device and the omission of the plasma caster. One of the biggest changes in the film, however, was the redesign of the creature's face.
Dan Trachtenberg explained that the Feral Predator came from a different hemisphere of Yautja Prime which gave him distinct features compared to previous incarnations of the alien seen by audiences. This design choice led to wider and angled eyes, an elongated head, and an even bigger mouth. The change has been divisive among the fanbase, with some liking the variation while others accusing it of dishonoring Stan Winston's legacy.
Some might be surprised to find out that the change may have been inspired by Stan Winston himself. During the creative process of Predator, the VFX guru sketched out numerous ideas which led to the Jungle Hunter seen in the final film. But one of the earlier pieces of concept art featured the creature sporting angled, wide eyes and a large mouth similar to the one in Prey.
This makes the Feral Predator closer to Stan Winston's original vision, rather than the departure it was claimed to be.
