Ranking April 2015's Movies From Worst To Best

8. Lost River

RottenTomatoes Score: 31% (4.7/10) Box Office: Even with a tiny $2 million budget, there's no guarantees that Ryan Gosling's directorial debut will end up in the black. Lost River has rustled up just $39,585 at the indie box office after 2 weeks on release, and is unlikely to be much of a success on VOD and home video platforms either. The Verdict: Gosling's influences are clear throughout this surreal neo-noir, from David Lynch to his frequent collaborator Nicolas Winding Refn. The problem is that Gosling doesn't manage to convince that he has anything of his own to offer, because as beautiful as the film often looks, the narrative is willfully obtuse and seemingly randomly weird just for its own sake, while failing to muster up any emotion whatsoever. Performances from Christina Hendricks and Saoirse Ronan in particular are decent, but they're just not given enough to do in a project that feels like a film student trying desperately to imitate the masters. Not as terrible as the disastrous Cannes premiere suggested, but still a bust all the same.
