Ranking August 2018's Movies From Worst To Best

3. Searching

Searching John Cho
Screen Gems

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 90% (7.4/10)

Box Office: The budget for this point-of-view techno-thriller is clearly very small, as its gimmick allows, though Searching only grossed $388,769 in its opening U.S. weekend. Its expansion to more cinemas over the coming weeks should give it a nice boost, but enough to be a success? Wait and see.

Verdict: The "shared screen" gimmick is on the verge of becoming the horror genre's next big trend, but Aneesh Chaganty's cyber-thriller is far more than just a me-too Unfriended follow-up.

A dizzyingly intense film which casts a never-better John Cho in the role of detective and father, Searching is not only a surprise nerve-shredder, it's also one of the most unexpectedly poignant films of the year so far.
