Ranking Every DC Movie Villain From Worst To Best
29. Dr. Hector Hammond - Peter Sarsgaard (Green Lantern)
Again, like with Tommy Lee Jones, having excellent character actor Peter Sarsgaard play a comic book villain looked like a genius move on paper. It was just when it went on screen that the problems started.
Green Lantern is obviously an easy target, because of how idiotic the whole thing is, but Sarsgaard's Hector Hammond is a delight on a whole new level. Like Eisenberg's Lex Luthor, he's a villain driven by an over-bearing abusive father (nice originality, guys) who is accidentally infected with fear, magnifying his douche-baggery to supervillain levels. You know, that old chestnut.
Obviously his residual mental instability (brought about by having a head that resembles a giant testicle, probably) accounts for him staying evil after his father dies, but there's a dangerous lack of motivation, and the film is all too aware. By the time he's completely dropped for the final act, it's hard to even care, particularly as he doesn't fit the film's discomforting notion that great feats of Will and power are possible, but only if you're a handsome, athletic type and not a big ugly nerd.
