Rotten Tomatoes Score: 78% (6.8/10)

Box Office: To the surprise of nobody, Captain Marvel continued the MCU's mighty streak of easy commercial hits, scoring a $456.7 million worldwide opening, the sixth-biggest of all time.

Currently the highest-grossing film of 2019 by a colossal margin, the superhero origin story will likely have crossed the $1 billion mark by the time you read this, making it the 7th MCU film to pass the milestone.

Verdict: A good deal more formulaic and familiar than just about anyone hoped for, Captain Marvel nevertheless succeeds on the strength of its conviction-filled Brie Larson performance, her brilliant banter with Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, and a number of slippery narrative surprises.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's direction isn't up to much and the writing feels oddly boilerplate for such a pivotal piece of the MCU, but hopefully the upcoming Avengers: Endgame will bolster Carol Danvers' status as a front-line superhero.
