6. The Kindergarten Teacher

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 90% (7.38/10)

Box Office: This is a tough one to figure out, between the lack of budgetary information and it being released internationally on Netflix back in October.

A small theatrical roll-out in Europe has netted just $411,172, and even with Netflix surely paying a pretty penny for the domestic streaming rights (against an evidently small budget), it's tough to imagine this one being much profitable.

Verdict: One of the most incisive and brilliantly acted films from the last 12 months that's probably passed you by entirely, The Kindergarten Teacher is a rare remake of a foreign language film that really, really works - and arguably betters the original.

An extremely discomforting look at a dissatisfied kindergarten teacher (an electrifying Maggie Gyllenhaal) who becomes obsessed with a bright young student in her class, The Kindergarten Teacher walks an impressive tonal tight-rope as it leaves audiences guessing quite where it's all going.

In a just world Gyllenhaal would've received an Oscar nomination for her incredible performance here, but all the same, this is a low-key drama that packs a visceral, deeply unsettling punch.
