Clint Eastwood struck gold for a second time in 2004 thanks to his searing sports drama Million Dollar Baby, which deserved the award even if it wasn't as strong as fellow nominee Sideways.
Directed by Alexander Payne, it follows two depressed 40-somethings as they venture into wine country for a wedding and struggle to come to grips with their personal and professional lives.
Simply told and expertly shifting between all-out comedy, drama and bumpy romance, Sideways may not be as showy as Eastwood's winner, but its subtly and endearing performances make it a movie to cherish.
