7. Undertone
Ian Tuason's micro-budget triumph Undertone - which follows a paranormal podcast host who receives some extremely disturbing recordings - is all about the thrill of that initial sensory experience.
With the film being so intently focused on sound from start to finish, it's absolutely best experienced on the big screen, or failing that at home with a beefy sound system or at least a very nice pair of headphones.
And that first viewing makes for such an impressively tactile sonic experience that, especially for those who saw it in the cinema, no repeat viewing will ever be quite the same.
The sound design does such a phenomenal job of locking the viewer in on that first watch, where it feels like anything could happen, but of course once you know the tricks that are in store, it's not quite so alluring.
Hopefully Tuason will manage to bring the same low-fi stylistic flair to his upcoming take on the Paranormal Activity franchise.
