Emilie Blichfeldt's astonishing. Oscar-nominated feature debut The Ugly Stepsister is an expertly crafted blackly comedic body horror reimagining of Aschenputtel, the original 19th century fairy-tale on which Cinderella was later based.

From its witty script and confident direction to its gorgeous production design and Lea Myren's superb lead performance, this is a fantastic movie, albeit one that's so keen to gross-out you'll probably be hard-pressed to give it a second viewing.

Blichfeldt holds nothing back in depicting the many brutal procedures Myren's title character undergoes in an attempt to appear more "beautiful," from a primitive chisel rhinoplasty to foot mutilation and, worst of all, ingesting a tapeworm for weight loss which is later traumatically removed.

A single viewing leaves one hell of an impression, and as exceptional as The Ugly Stepsister is, it's tough for anyone without the strongest of constitutions to willingly put themselves through its nauseating sights ever again.
