Rogue One: 8 Ways It Could Enhance The Star Wars Mythology

1. It's Shaping Up To Be The Most Complex Star Wars Movie Ever

Though the Star Wars franchise is a vast entity, one could certainly make an argument that its take on the nature of good and evil is somewhat juvenile; that the characters are one-dimensional; that the saga lacks... well, complexity.

It appears that Rogue One, however, is positioned to void such criticisms of the world's most famous sci-fi franchise - to raise the stakes and show us the galaxy far, far away in a way we've yet to see it before. That doesn't just mean blurring the line between good guys and bad guys, but also rendering a narrative that doesn't stick to the classic mould; one that doesn't adhere so closely to the "Hero's Journey."

This is a film with the potential to be genuinely complex and to break all the rules that we've come to know about what, exactly, Star Wars is. A film that slots effortlessly into the established canon, but also has permission to be its own thing and to explore avenues that the mainstream Star Wars films - bound by the legacy and requirements of their own canon - haven't been able to do.

Rogue One is that exciting first step into a larger world, and the possibilities it offer up - for now and for the future - are endless. This could be the movie that comes to define Star Wars for a new generation - more so than the Sequel Trilogy, even - and a chance to conjure up some genuine complexity and enrich the franchise. Bring it on.
