Rogue One: 8 Ways It Could Enhance The Star Wars Mythology
2. The Saw Gerrera Connection
It was recently revealed that Forest Whitaker is actually playing Saw Gerrera, a name that anybody familiar with Star Wars: The Clone Wars will already know.
In the show, Gerrera is a human who finds himself playing a minor role in the galactic conflict after his planet his home threatened. After requesting help from the Jedi Temple, he - and other rebels - are trained by Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi to fight against the Separatists. We now know that he'll turn up as a much older - and more grizzled - veteran in Rogue One, as played by Whitaker.
It's unprecedented for a Star Wars movie to feature an already established character like this in a major role, given that there's always been a feeling that the films and the TV shows are worlds apart. Many Star Wars fans - even the hardcore ones - tend to disregard TV entities like The Clone Wars in favour of the actual Episodes; and though they're considered "canon," they're pretty easy to ignore.
Having Saw Gerrera as a main character in Rogue One, however, helps to bind two aspects of the Star Wars universe together, cementing the "expanded" nature of the franchise to a more permanent degree.
