Russell Crowe: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

2. Robin Longstride - Robin Hood

It didn't take long for Russell Crowe to have to start defending his performance in Ridley Scott's underwhelming Robin Hood, after British critics in particular began taking the Aussie to task for his incredulous accent, which BBC radio arts reporter Mark Lawson believed made Robin Longstride sound like "an Irishman who took frequent holidays in Australia". Though Crowe retorted that, "You've got dead ears, mate -- seriously dead ears if you think there's an Irish accent", he eventually began muttering and stormed out of the interview, again reinforcing the actor's notoriously bad temper, but more importantly implying that the criticism might actually have a little truth to it, too. And that it did; though Crowe absolutely has the physical aspects of the role down pat, his accent is shaky at best, fleeting between various different affectations and not settling on a single one. The feeling coming away from Robin Hood is that Scott should have just cast a British actor instead, though really, that is the least of the film's problems.
