4. Count Vronsky - Anna Karenina (1997)
Bean had his opportunity to portray a classic literary character and mine the depth that such figures tend to have. This should have been his chance to really distinguish himself from his previous roles but on this occasion did nothing but reinforce that stereotype. Vronsky's look is perfect for the time, but the compliments stopped there. Derided for his lack of chemistry with co-star Sophie Marceau and his stiff acting when his world should have been falling apart around him, Bean could look the part, but evidently could not play the part. This one mistake was a major career mis-step - it could well have propelled him towards the pinnacle of dramatic actors, but his one dimensional performance meant he didn't even come close.
