20 Secret Movie Sub-Plots You Didn't Notice

3. Identity Clues - Blade Runner (1982)

Blade Runner Ending Harrison Ford

The brilliance of Blade Runner's greatest mystery - is protagonist Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) a human or a replicant? - is that it becomes more complex the more you try to answer it.

Throughout the film's various cuts, director Ridley Scott made sure to bury the mystery as deep as he could, never giving anything away. However, there are references in the theatrical cut and beyond of Deckard's ex-wife, who he says, in passing, used to call him "cold fish."

The original script for Blade Runner made this past relationship far more overt than this, suggesting after all that Deckard is human, but Scott scrubbed most evidence of her existence from his cut - save for a hazy picture of the pair on Deckard's piano - to increase the tension of Deckard's identity.

Is this a false memory? A past that proves Deckard's humanity? Who knows, but it sure is clear that Deckard's history, whatever the truth may be, is so tangled not even he can decipher it.
