Sony Are Gunna Call The Ghostbusters Back For A Sequel

...Whether you like it or not.

Ghostbusters 2

Good news, fans of watching angry fanboys explode on Youtube in rage - Ghostbusters 2 is set to be greenlit by Sony.

Despite the film being hugely hyped - to the point where it was almost more a meme than a movie for a while, there - the future of the rebooted Ghostbusters timeline was never quite set in concrete. Paul Feig spoke ominously of a $500m required box office haul to make Sony pay attention, and social media has been positively flooded with politicised GB activists telling people to go and see the film because it's important (some are even saying it's good and actually WORTH watching too).

But for all that, it seems Sony are already on side. The opening US weekend took $46m, which isn't exactly brilliant (nor is coming in second to The Secret Life Of Pets), but it's enough for Sony to quickly confirm that they want to bring back Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Kristen Wiig to their jumpsuits again, as Sony chief Rory Bruer told The Wrap:

“I expect Ghostbusters to become an important brand and franchise. While nothing has been officially announced yet, there’s no doubt in my mind it will happen."

It's no bad thing: even if you didn't enjoy the first movie particularly (I didn't, sue me), there was a lot of promise in there. The start was great, the characters were roughly good ideas and the attempt to actually scare was welcome, but the execution lacked something and the joke success rate was embarrassingly low for the number attempted. For me, the weak link was actually Feig himself, and replacing him (Adam McKay needs to be called immediately) but keeping the framework for the first film might yield more universally pleasing results.

That way, we might end up with a Ghostbusters film that people enjoy more on merit, rather than solely because of its importance. Both are possible, and in the long run a great movie with that cast would be far more impactful than a slightly mediocre one.

Meanwhile (as per DVD Talk), Feig has revealed that the home release of Ghostbusters will add more to the film. He revealed that his team "are literally... doing our extended cut of the movie. There will be one, and it will be a good 15 to 17 minutes longer than the theatrical feature”.

Hopefully someone at Sony will insist there's also a cut that restores the hilarious looking dance number that plays only over the final credits into the actual movie. Because not putting that in for an added boost of fun was almost unforgivable.
