Discounting Big Hero 6, the last time we got a fully fledged animated superhero feature was 2007's TMNT. Before that, the last one from the Big Two was Batman: Mask of the Phantasm which, while an unparalleled critical success, completely tanked at the box-office. Sony's return to the medium, then, could be considered something of a gamble.

But that's also what makes it so refreshing. Comic books and animation go together like Batman and Robin; they're inseparable from the other and, no matter where you look, there's been an animated superhero production. With the rise of the live-action comic book film having off-set the genre's animated efforts by a great margin, to see a potential resurgence on the line is fascinating, if not downright brilliant too.

While it remains to be seen if audiences will invest as heavily in an animated superhero film, things are currently looking very good for Spider-Man. If it provokes DC to reinvest in their animated properties, or for Disney to do so as well, then it could be one of the most important superhero films of the last few years, let alone the next one.

Indeed, with a potential Justice League reunion on the line, things could get very interesting indeed...
