Spider-Man: What Every Major Movie Villain ALMOST Looked Like
5. Lizard (Again) - The Amazing Spider-Man

Unfortunately for Marc Webb and Rhys Ifans, the Lizard that would become the crowning big bad in The Amazing Spider-Man wasn't as good as he could have been. There were slightly too many parallels to draw with the Goombahs from the awful Super Mario Bros movie in the final version.
Looking at the concept art - including that above by Jerad Marantz - there was clearly two schools of thought when it came to designing him. The first was to retain some of his humanity and essentially make a lizard/man hybrid.
The second was to go with artist Ian Joyner's approach and make Lizard far more of a monster...

Somewhat weirdly Aaron Sims also put together a lizard concept that was based on actor Chris Cooper. Perhaps the original plan was to have Cooper play Kurt Konnors rather than Norman Osborn? Or maybe just a case of crossed wires?

And rounding out the designs for Lizard, Jerad S. Marantz did quite a few alternate designs that very much made Lizard a lizard/man rather than the more grotesque creature Joyner had pitched...

The result in those headshots is a little Star Trek alien, but the full character design does seem to suggest a slightly more animalistic look...
