Star Wars: Rise Of Skywalker - Everything It Gets Wrong
13. The INSANELY Bad Editing & Scene Geography
We can talk about forced fan service and falling back on established characters for plot twists or retcons, but when it comes to filmmaking, that's where Rise of Skywalker falls down hardest.
Simply put, the editing here is atrocious. So many times we have scenarios set up - characters in specific places, threats established or stakes raised - only for a screen wipe to change everything that was going down.
Besides never letting any scene breathe for even a second - be it dialogue or action-based - one notable battle between Kylo and Rey fighting over a troop transport results in the latter being saved by a cutaway, rather than anything logical. Kylo apparently stands in the same place, not chasing his quarry or the one person he's been asked to kill, as the movie moves on and everyone teleports to the next location.
Sadly, over time this only happens more and more - a consequence of Abrams cramming far too much into the movie's runtime.
