9. Which Returning Villains Are In It?
One of the biggest discussion points around Rogue One is what kind of presence the evil Empire will have in the film. After all, the film takes place at the very height of the Empires powers, before the Rebellion had destroyed the first Death Star, and before Luke Skywalker and Han Solo had joined the crusade against galactic tyranny. Rumours persist that Lucasfilm were spending many hours trying to digitally recreate Grand Moff Tarkin, the high-ranking Imperial played by the sadly-deceased Peter Cushing in the original film. And if ILM's tech geniuses can create a convincing digital duplicate of Cushing, you can be sure theyll fit him into the movie. Darth Vader is little easier to include. Anyone of the right stature could fit in the suit, while James Earl Jones has regularly returned to voice the character over the years. But how would he fit into the movie? Will he be a background baddie who orders lackeys about or a genuine menace on the front lines? Getting Vader right without overpowering the focus of the film will be a challenge. Hes so powerful that he could take down an entire band of Rebels with ease (just see the opening scene of A New Hope for evidence), so it doesnt seem likely that hell be able to feature too heavily in Rogue One. If he did, surely the Empire would win. The same problem affects Emperor Palpatine, who it's probably wise not to expect.
