Star Wars Rogue One: 10 Big Questions From What We Know So Far

2. Are There Sequel Possibilities?

Could Rogue One be the launching pad for a swathe of sequels? If the film makes significant amounts of money, Lucasfilm are bound to consider a follow-up, and there are a few ways in which that could work. The obvious sequel route is the plans to retrieve the second Death Star€™s plans, a mission which - as Mon Mothma told us in Return Of Jedi €“ saw €˜many Bothans€™ die. But would audiences want a sequel that followed the exact plot of the first movie, just with a few new characters? It worked for 22 Jump Street, but could a major sci-fi franchise get away with it? Possibly not. Instead, it€™s more interesting to think of what the Rogue One crew did next, after retrieving the Death Star plans and delivering them to Leia. If they are indeed a rogue band of bounty hunters collected for this one mission, could they fly off looking for a new adventure in the same way that Guardians Of The Galaxy ended? Or, could one of these characters be a big break-out star? Lucasfilm will be hoping that one or more of these characters gathers their own fandom, which could lead to more spin-off movies. It'll be a while until anyone knows for sure, but it seems unlikely that Lucasfilm would pour this much money into a new movie without leaving a few doors propped open for potential follow-ups.
