Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 9 Plot Holes That Almost Ruined The Film

5. How Did Luke's Lightsaber Survive Its Fall From Bespin?

"It's a story for another time."
That's what Maz Kanata enigmatically says to Han Solo when he asks her how she came to possess the iconic lightsaber that Luke Skywalker lost more than 30 years ago during the climax of The Empire Strikes Back. You know, when Darth Vader chopped off his son's hand and tried to get him to turn to the Dark Side. Classic. You'll remember that said lightsaber tumbled into oblivion and was thought to be lost forever, because surely nothing could have survived tumbling off into Bespin's gassy atmosphere, where it would almost certainly have been obliterated? How did it ever wind up being a part of the latest chapter in the Star Wars saga? Does that make any sense? The Force Awakens doesn't bother to explain why or how Luke's - or Anakin's, if you want to get technical - lightsaber managed to make it through a journey into the abyss in one piece, but its survival is certainly a plot thread of the convoluted kind. One that feels hammy and convenient, to a point where it's hard to go along with it.
