3. He's Turned To The Dark Side
Luke never gave into the Dark Side during the Original Trilogy, despite the best efforts of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader, and in the final moments the two people running the Empire at the very top were both dead. Happy days for Luke then, right? But what if it wasn't so great. He struggled with the grief of his father dying, had no enemies to fight, and ended up actually turning to the Dark Side after all. That's why we don't see him in the trailer, because he's now an all-powerful Sith Lord, and it's him Kylo Ren is talking to, not Vader's mask, when he says that he'll "finish what you started." Aside from the PLOT TWIST aspect of this, the reason this theory has gained some traction is the fact that Mark Hamill has said in the past he'd hoped Luke would go over to the Dark Side, as it'd be more fun to play as an actor. He said this on an episode of Jon Favreau's Dinner For Five, 10 years ago. And who was one of the other guests back then? J.J. Abrams.
