The Rumour: One of the most stirring images from The Last Jedi's marketing was Luke and R2-D2 standing in front of what's presumed to be his Jedi Temple, which is burning to the ground.

Now, we know from The Force Awakens that a calamity during Luke's training of Kylo Ren is what sent him into self-imposed exile, but what if there's a darker truth to the story?

The theory posits that following Kylo's turn to the Dark Side, a terrified, enraged Luke killed all the other Padawans in order to wipe out the Jedi, save for himself, deeming his own power too dangerous to pass on to others.

The Truth: Though The Last Jedi does reveal that Luke actually considered killing a sleeping Kylo in a moment of weakness, Luke didn't physically kill any of the other Jedi-in-training himself.

Kylo wakes up before Luke can kill him, after which a fight breaks out and Kylo buries Luke under some rubble, then burns the Jedi Temple down, kills most of the Padawans and takes off with a few whose lives he spared.

This feels much more consistent with Luke's established character while adding some intriguingly ambiguous shading. If the theory was true, flat-out stating that he killed a bunch of youngsters would've made him incredibly hard to sympathise with, and only would've worked dramatically if he eventually took a full turn to the Dark Side.
