Yep. It's that time of year again.

With the latest Star Wars film safely out of theatres and all eyes now firmly locked on the next instalment, our old friends the rumour mill, the fan-theory machine and the hype train are running stronger for Star Wars: The Last Jedi than they ever have before.

And that's not without cause, either. The Force Awakens left us with heaps of unanswered questions and dangling threads, and since, upon its release, we had a two-year wait for answers, who can blame people for attempting to fill in the blanks?

This has resulted in a tonne of of creative fan-theories regarding the upcoming episode, as though the long wait has sent people into a perpetual state of mental hyperactivity - where even the tiniest, most inconsequential of details from prior Star Wars movies (or the expanded universe) can be scaled up into a full-on crackpot prediction.

There are no shortage of these when it comes to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and while some are thought-provoking, others are hard to imagine, completely unlikely or plain impossible. This is the most expansive franchise in film history after all, and if you look hard enough, you can find 'evidence' to support just about anything.

We've scoured the web for the craziest, least-likely or most out-there theories we could find, and here are eight of the best.

8. Snoke Is The Last Jedi

Besides Rey's parentage, the true identity of Supreme Leader Snoke (if he's not who he says he is) was the biggest question posed by The Force Awakens, and one that The Last Jedi will hopefully answer.

And one theory, posed by Reddit user AnakinKardashian, claims to know the truth; Supreme Leader Snoke will be revealed as the last Jedi that the title references.

The theory cites Disney and LucasFilm's sudden obsession with Jedi history (Jedha in Rogue One, the Jedi Temple in Episode 7, a recent novel wherein Palpatine sends someone to Jakku to uncover an ancient secret), combined with Snoke's apparent old age, as evidence.

This all points to Snoke being the last surviving member of the ancient Jedi order, a group that were active long before Obi-Wan, Mace Windu, and anyone else that forms our traditional perception of the word "Jedi".

In short, the ancient order was comprised of Jedi, in their original form.

That all sounds fine on the surface (besides the fact that foreign translations of the title revealed "Jedi" is being used as a plural, not a singular), but perhaps "Snoke: The Early Years" wouldn't be the most exciting direction Episode 8 could head in.
