Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Every Reveal From EW's Cover Story
8. The Vulptices
Porgs have been getting all of the attention on the creature front heading into The Last Jedi, but they're not the only intriguing new animals in the galaxy. We first caught a glimpse of these strange snow foxes - later confirmed to be crystalline by Johnson - in the official trailer as they ran over the surface of Crait (where a big battle will be taking place in the film), and EW have shed some more light on them.
For a start, it's called a vulptex, and the pluralisation of that is vulptices. Yes, it is very Pokémon. Neal Scanlan, head of the Star Wars creature shop, said: "The idea is that these wonderful, sort of feral creatures had lived on this planet and had consumed the planet’s surface, and as such had become crystalline."
Scanlan also spoke about creating them, and the answer is just so damn wholesome:
"We had a little dog come in and we built a little suit for it, and we covered that suit with clear drinking straws. It was amazing to see him run around. It could run and jump, and it had this wonderful sort of movement to it. It had a great sound to it, as well, because all the little straws moved and flexed with the animal.”
They're not just cute critters though, and actually provide a real purpose for the Resistance on Crait, as Scanlan explains: "They live within the burrows and within the tunnels beneath the planet. So there is a time where their ability to shine within the darkness, should provide a guiding light to our heroes.”
