Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker - 10 Reasons To Be Worried
3. Rehashing Previous Instalments (Again)
Upon release, there was one criticism of The Force Awakens that everyone agreed on: it was a borderline remake of A New Hope. A protagonist from a desert planet, a giant space weapon that could destroy planets, a droid containing important information - it ticked all the boxes of the original Star Wars too closely.
The Last Jedi wasn't totally a remake of The Empire Strikes Back, but it did have some noticeable similarities: Rey being trained by Luke on a remote location paralleled Luke's training days with Yoda, and the climax on Crait was all too reminiscent of Hoth.
Sadly, The Rise of Skywalker looks like it's continuing this trend of rehashing the original trilogy. Rey goes back to Jakku, and some action scenes take place there. There's also a forest planet they visit, Lando Calrissian is flying the Millennium Falcon, and Emperor Palpatine is back presumably manipulating the hero and villain to fight. Sounds like Return of the Jedi to me.
This rehashing is why many fans are annoyed by the sequel trilogy: they haven't done anything new, and certainly haven't justified their own existence (aside from making big bank for Disney).
