7. Joker Rising

YouTube is a veritable junkyard of Batman and/or Joker related fan films. The quality ranges from being shot on iPhones by teenagers to professional looking entries that are more watchable than either of Joel Schumacher's. It would be unfair to bash the no-budget teenage fan films too much. At least they are trying. Some of the fan-filmmakers however, should and could do better. "Joker Rising" is a full-length offering that brings an alternative, gritty Joker origin story. It's a fan film trying to be a Scorcese film trying to be a Batman film. Abandoning the popular "Jack Napier" origin, our villain starts out as a fledgling criminal named Cyrus. The story manages to competently tie in versions Black Mask, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Penguin and the Riddler. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTeR5E0qTck It's really not that bad...until Cyrus actually becomes the Joker. The budget for the movie was about $5,000 and roughly $1.75 of that was spent on Joker's makeup and costume. His motivation for becoming a criminal clown? He misses his dead girlfriend. He is a deeply emotional Joker with over-the-top gravitas. We'll pass.
