Suicide Squad: 12 Last Minute Concerns You Won't Admit

2. Will Smith Is Too... Will Smith

Harley Quinn Sexist
Warner Bros.

When Will Smith was cast, it did seem that he was taking a bold career swerve and playing a darker, edgier character like Robin Williams playing a psychopath in One Hour Photo, or Adam Sandler not being entirely awful in Punch Drunk Love. And the first trailers did seem to reinforce that - so too did the news of his research into psychos - but as more and more footage was revealed, it's obvious that the film is trading on the established brand.

The problem with that is that while the idea of Will Smith playing Deadshot - in a pure performance sense - is compelling, the idea of Deadshot actually being Will Smith is far more difficult. And less appealing.

I don't want to see the cocky, gag-spitting action hero from Independence Day and Men In Black any more than I want to see him singing the Suicide Squad theme tune. I want something that consciously defies expectations of his past performances, and the marketing does not contain enough of that.

Hopefully the film will, but it's a tough challenge.
