Sundance 2022: 20 Films You Need To Know About

11. Emergency

Boasting one of the most attention-grabbing setups of any Sundance movie this year, Emergency follows three college students - two Black, one Latino - who discover a passed-out white girl on the floor of their home.

Well aware of how bad it looks, and how poorly society will give people-of-colour the benefit of the doubt in situations like this, the trio are forced to strategise how to get the girl to safety without compromising their own.

Director Carey Williams does a fantastic job milking the setup for both outrageous satire and white-knuckle suspense, as the situation becomes increasingly erratic and complex.

As the central trio, RJ Cyler, Donald Elise Watkins, and Sebastian Chacon give remarkable, wholly empathetic performances, in a satirical thriller that gracefully glides between tones.
