12. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
Casual moviegoers walked out of 28 Years Later totally bewildered by its admittedly audience-alienating ending, and so many of them simply opted not to even bother watching follow-up 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, assuming it to simply not be for them.
But they ended up missing out on a searing sequel that easily ranks as the franchise's second-best, behind only the original.
This Nia DaCosta-directed sequel picks up immediately following the previous film's ending, which jarringly introduced the villainous Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell), and delivers a post-apocalyptic horror film that's by turns grim, occasionally hilarious, and very often unexpected.
The Bone Temple does a fantastic job of building out the franchise's lore, paying off its existing characters, and setting the stage for the next chapter - assuming it gets made, of course - while giving Ralph Fiennes the floor to deliver one of his finest performances.
Needless to say, not a single person watching saw that Iron Maiden scene coming.
