7. A Clockwork Orange
The ultimate auteur director, Kubrick made any number of classic films but it is Clockwork Orange that stands out as the most iconic and interesting. Violent and disturbing, in the early 70s it was controversial enough to be banned in the UK so when it finally had a legal cinema release in 1999 it was brought fresh to the attention of a modern audience. Although the settings and feel of the film are a little dated, the themes and nature of the story make it almost impossible to remake it well, although that hasnt stopped Hollywood before. Malcolm McDowell made the part of Alex his own, at times menacing, then innocent and ultimately sympathetic, all the things we wouldnt feel for a remake starring Shia LaBeouf. This is one film you would CERTAINLY need to be strapped into the cinema to watch!
