4. Mr. Freeze – Bryan Cranston

Matt Reeves himself is interested in bringing an iteration of popular villain Victor Fries to life within his Gotham, and an actor of such extraordinary calibre and magnitude as Bryan Cranston may just be the man to do that. To the average Joe, the famous foe’s name may look rather silly at first glance, but behind the dome helmet and red goggles is an incredibly complex, tortured, and tragic villain whose desperation to cure his dying wife’s terminal illness makes him cruel and callous in his methods of achieving his goal.

It would not be unreasonable to diagnose Mr. Freeze as a morally grey character. His ambition to save his wife ultimately ends in anguish, as his despair leads him to adopt a ruthless approach by killing anything or anyone in his path. Freeze’s good intentions are clear to see; however, his evil actions cloud the former. With that in mind, Cranston’s Walter White, as depicted in Breaking Bad, showcased a man who put his family’s safety and financial security at the forefront of his mind at the beginning of his story.

But, as time passed, Cranston’s character spiralled to become the show’s true villain after his moral ambiguity branded his heinous and monstrous crimes unjustifiable before his death. There are clear parallels between the two sinister scientists, and Cranston would revitalise the character who is in desperate need of on-screen redemption for obvious reasons...
