The Making Of The MCU: 17 Fascinating Behind-The-Scenes Details You Need To Know

1. Marvel Wanted Robert Downey Jr To Play Doctor Doom

One of the most pivotal moments in MCU history was the casting of Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark, so the book, of course, touches on that decision.

During this section, a rather fascinating nugget is dropped by Iron Man director Jon Favreau, who reveals that Marvel had previously met with Downey for an entirely different role: the villainous Doctor Doom.

The book doesn't specify which project Favreau is referring to, but it's safe to assume it was for 2005's Fantastic Four, in which Doom is the primary evil-doer. If that is the case, then we can only imagine how relieved the actor is that he didn't win the role - Iron Man is the movie that revitalized his career, whereas that Fantastic Four franchise fizzled out after 2007's Rise Of The Silver Surfer.

Either way, Downey certainly has a thing for metal-masked Marvel icons, doesn't he?

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
