silversurfer1.jpgFor those over 15 who saw Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, including me, it's likely that you went to see the sequel to a movie you hated because of the cool and frequent presence of the surfer in the trailers and advertisements. Well, the approx ten minutes of Surfer screen time has earned 20th Century Fox $57.4 million, that's one $1.3 million more than the original did in 2005. Can it go on to make $100 million more to match the total of the last movie? Bad word of mouth would probably suggest not, and that opening weekend will have been full of kids desperate to see it, and the rest who were curious to see The Silver Surfer. Still it's made enough to expect Fantastic Four 3 and also a Silver Surfer spin-off. The other big new release of the week was Nancy Drew, which Warner Brothers got so very wrong. The marketing was poor, the type of atmosphere and tone created from the trailers and the whole look of the direction for the flick meant it deserved its 7th place opening, a poor taking of $7.1 million. Ocean's Thirteen continues to do as well as the previous two in the franchise, now amassing a total of $69.8 million over ten days although you have to remember the previous two were released in the Christmas season which allowed for a long life span... they won't have that luxury over the next few weeks. Knocked Up continues to be a huge success only dropping 26% in takings from last week whilst Hostel 2 is proving to be a failure as it's now made less than half of what the first Hostel made after the same amount of release days. Oh, what a shame!
