The Spectacular Spider-Man: 10 Reasons It's Already Doomed

6. Throwing In Iron Man Just Because

Iron Man risks becoming the go-to fixer of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the superhero equivalent of The Rock. Want to add a couple of hundred mil to the box office? Just throw in Tony Stark. Fun for a bit, when it's done in every movie it'll quickly get tired. Unlike Chris Evans, who has made it publicly known he's ready to leave Captain America behind when his contract's up, Robert Downey, Jr. is more than happy to keep signing on for more and more turns as his increasingly indistinct alter ego Tony Stark. He's already extended his initial multi-film contract twice, set to appear in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1 and 2, and now it looks like he's going to be in The Spectacular Spider-Man, where he and the web-crawler will get in a bit of a scuffle. There's nothing wrong with more Stark - Downey, Jr. is a delight in the role and the franchise wouldn't be where it is without him - but whereas he has a key part to play in Civil War, putting him in Spider-Man doesn't make much sense outside of the marketing department. At this rate, don't be surprised if he winds up jetting into space for Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 and off to Wakanda for Black Panther just to get the name on the masthead. Although at least there there's the potential for something new. Audiences will have already seen Iron Man duke it out with another Marvel stalwart with much higher stakes only a year earlier in Captain America: Civil War, which further makes the whole appearance feel rather perfunctory.
