Thor Ragnarok: 10 Big Questions From What We Know So Far

6. Which Other Villains Are In It?

€˜Ragnarok€™ is the Asgardian term for apocalypse, and you€™d surely expect every available villain to come out of the woodwork if there was chance to destroy the home of the goodie-two-shoes gods of Asgard. This has led to fan theories that Loki and Blanchett€™s character won€™t be the only baddies in Thor: Ragnarok. But who else could there be? The giant fire demon Surtur (pictured above) seems like a safe bet. In the comics, a prophecy once predicted that Loki would free Surtur from entrapment as a way to kick start Ragnarok and bring about the destruction of Asgard. In the film, this could be Loki€™s ultimate means of achieving revenge over the Asgardian society that he still feels betrayed by. The apocalyptic Ragnarok of the comics also features a giant wolf god, Skoll, who kills the Sun god and plunges the Nine Realms €“ including Asgard €“ into unending darkness. A big action scene along these lines could help the Ragnarok movie establish a sense of real danger, while the darkness it enables could give the movie a unique visual style within the MCU. It€™s not just giant wolfs and fire demons, either. In the comics, the Frost Giants and the reincarnated dead €“ at Hela€™s command €“ also gang up on Asgard, along with massive serpents and other assorted nasties. The film version will probably bring a lot of these monstrous baddies into play, in a bid to keep the stakes high and the action scenes engaging. Sounds good!
