Toy Story 4 Trailer Reactions: 9 Ups & 3 Downs
2. It's Not Trying To Reinvent The Wheel
There's an awful trend in 4th movies for film-makers to try too hard to do something completely different. Sometimes it works (Fast & Furious 4 and Jurassic World for instance), but most of the time, the attempt to distinguish from the first trilogy is a mistake. That's why you'll hear people saying things like "fourth movies are never good" and others nodding sagely - there's just too much precedent to argue.
For all the concerns about Toy Story 4 being a copy/paste job, there should be some comfort taken in the fact that nobody is trying to reinvent the wheel too much. Provided there's enough balance between the old and the new - which the trailer provocatively mentions almost in order to address this - it will be great and the re-emergence of ideas seeded years ago should be comforting to fans.
There is a sense here that this will be a torch-passing movie (or the last ever Toy Story), but like Toy Story 2 says "it'll be fun while it lasts."
