It Follows was the horror film that put lead actress Maika Monroe on the map, and over the last decade-plus she's built up an enviable filmography of tenacious performances in quality horror films, firmly establishing herself as a scream queen in the process.

And after 12 years of fans hoping that an It Follows sequel might get made, it's now finally in production.

We don't know a whole lot about the follow-up as of yet, but Monroe will return in the lead role of protagonist Jay, with the story taking place a decade after the original.

Monroe has suggested that the sequel will surprise fans of the original and that Jay won't necessarily be in the place that audiences expect, implying that it's going to provide her a ripe opportunity for a serious acting workout.

While this sequel has a whole lot to live up to, considering that filmmaker David Robert Mitchell has let it marinate for over a decade while the original's popularity has only continued to soar, hopefully it'll expand the first film's eerie mythos and characters in a satisfying and meaningful way.
