20 Upcoming Horror Movies That Are Already DOOMED
13. Friday the 13th Part 13
It's completely maddening that we haven't had a new Friday the 13th movie since 2009's remake, because despite its commercial success, the franchise has spent more than a decade mired in legal red tape, largely due to a dispute between franchise creators Sean S. Cunningham and Victor Miller.
The disagreement was resolved in 2021, and after years of murmurs about a new film, in July 2025 it was finally confirmed that a 13th Friday the 13th movie was indeed in early development.
A cause for celebration, then? Not quite.
The film is said to be part of the emerging "Jason Universe" - a media empire centered around Jason Voorhees, but one that comes with some frustrating legal restrictions.
Due to the title "Friday the 13th" being owned by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, any new Jason movie without their involvement cannot use that branding, while certain design elements from the existing films are also off-limits.
Basically this new Jason Universe film will have to tiptoe around a number of constraints which, in the end, might make it feel not enough like a Friday the 13th movie at all.
We can only hope that the filmmakers might find a way to partner with Warner Bros. and New Line, but don't hold your breath.
