What Does The Ending Of Blair Witch Really Mean?
What Happened In The Original?
So if that's the truth behind the mythology, what does that tell us about what happened to Heather, Mike and Josh in 1999? Well, it's now clear that by simply venturing into the woods they were dooming themselves and that the mysterious goings on were resolutely the work of the Witch (something that was admittedly possible to conclude even then).
It's in the final act where things get interesting. Josh disappears, Heather and Mike end up in the transporting house where they're both are attacked from behind, in Heather's case with Mike in the corner.
Taking the logic of the world, the best conclusion to be drawn is that Josh, whose mind was more fragile than it seemed, evidenced in his scathing camera assault the evening before disappearing, was corrupted by the Witch, enacted his own torture, and then lured the remaining two to the cabin, where he split and murdered them on the Witch's command. Yes - a toothless Josh kills Heather.
The exact line of the Witch's involvement - she will have been behind the tent attack - is unknown, but the final physical attack must come from a human, hence Josh. Mystery solved.
