Wonder Woman: 10 Reasons It's Actually Overrated

3. The Film Lacks A Truly Memorable Villain

If there's one fatal flaw that so many comic book films can't seem to overcome these days, it's managing to have an interesting villain. Sometimes it appears as though the studio can't even be bothered to try, and that looks to have been the case with Wonder Woman: the "villains" we get are second rate and uninspired.

First off, then, there's Doctor Poison (Elena Anaya), who generates some interest at first but ultimately fails to leave a lasting impression. Alongside Doctor Poison, we also get General Ludendorff, whose real purpose, it seems, is to deceive audiences into thinking that he's the main bad guy when really it's Ares, the God of War.

Ludendorff is played in a hammy but forgettable fashion by Danny Huston, whilst David Thewlis' turn as Ares is downright laughable. It's difficult not to chuckle at the thought of Thewlis on the Warner Bros. sound stage, screaming and shouting and pretending to be a Greek God in a giant, armoured suit.

Thing is, Wonder Woman tries to implement its major villain with a twist, which means there's no space in the movie to develop him as a character. By the end we're just watching - yet again, Warner Bros. - a loud and arbitrary CGI baddie.
