Wonder Woman: 21 New Details & Secrets Just Revealed
16. Richard Donner's Superman Was A Huge Influence
Though you might have expected past screen versions of Wonder Woman to be the inspiration for this new iteration, but Patty Jenkins told Collider she drew from another DC hero entirely.
"I’m here because of Superman. I’m here because when I saw [Richard Donner’s] Superman as a kid, it rocked my world, and I was Superman. I was that little boy. I took that ride and that journey. I always say that Star Wars had a huge effect on me too, but what Star Wars did for some people, Superman did for me. I remember the theater, I remember the feeling, I remember I cried and I laughed and I went through that whole thing and I was Superman. I believed in myself as Superman, and that’s the beauty of film."
As reference points go, that's a pretty strong one, and it suggests a particular tone that would be a good tonic to what we've seen in the DCEU so far. And if Jenkins is seeking the same sort of emotional resonance, that too is good news.
Jenkins told DenOfGeek that her movie ended up being...
"...Very ‘Superman meets Casablanca.’ It came up a lot, and Indiana Jones. It was those three films where I was like, ‘It’s a classic film. We are making a classic film.’ We care about humor, we care about epic, we care about heroism, we care about arc and story, and make it elegant. Go for it, don’t hold back and be more interesting with ‘shazang!’ Just try for that pocket all the time."
