World of Warcraft: 10 Things The Movie Needs

4. Take The Fanboys (And Girls) Head On

At the same time, Jones shouldn't be afraid to branch out on his own; I find fantasy to be one of the most formulaic and "samey" genres of fiction out there, with most efforts drawing their influence from a very small pool of original works, with the majority deferring to J.R.R. Tolkein. The quests in MMO games tend to be pretty similar, and as mentioned above, many of WoW's bigger narratives do draw quite generously from The Lord of the Rings. As such, given Jones' potent writing in his own works, we think he could easily concoct his own exhilarating storyline. Given how video game writers the vast majority of the time don't have a whole lot of experience in writing screenplays - with some very rare exceptions - it follows that getting a talented filmmaker to craft the story (who is respectful of the material, difficult though that seems to be) should bear a more coherent result. Duncan Jones have proven himself so far, and if he sought to expand the WoW mythology himself, I would have no problem with that, though he might have some foaming fanboys to answer to first.
