10 "Zero Expectation" Video Games That Blew Everyone Away
7. Until Dawn (2019)
First impressions are everything in the highly competitive world of video games. Despite its following now, Until Dawn didn't look promising when it was first announced at Gamescom in 2012.
Before this game became the grizzly choose-your-own adventure slasher, it was originally intended to be a first-person horror game for the PlayStation Move. This early version would see players exploring the isolated cabin, using the motion controls to move the flashlight, and it didn't look great to put it mildly.
The game looked horrendously outdated for its time thanks to stilted character models and jarring animations (not made much better by the motion controls). However, things didn't get much better for developers Supermassive Games when they dropped the motion controls and began transforming the game into what it's known as today.
Despite the visual upgrades and Hollywood cast, the corny teen horror stereotypes made the game look as enjoyable to play as watching a bad horror movie.
What wasn't known then, though, was that this schlocky aesthetic was all part of Until Dawn's charm.
Supermassive Games created an endearing homage to the teen slasher which would only get better with The Dark Pictures Anthology and The Quarry in the following years.
