10 "Zero Expectation" Video Games That Blew Everyone Away
6. Outer Wilds (2019)
Every so often a great game will be forgotten as soon as it's announced. One of these games was Outer Wilds.
Described by director Alex Beachum as "backpacking in space", this indie gem is an exploration mystery that sees players set loose upon a solar system where they'll uncover the history of a precursor race. All of which happens within a 20-minute time loop.
Revealed at E3 2018, Outer Wilds looked to be an enticing indie title. However, it was unfortunately drowned out with bigger, more anticipated announcements during Microsoft's conference which included Gears 5, Halo Infinite. Forza Horizon 4, and Ori And The Wil Of The Wisps.
Upon launch, Outer Wilds proved to be far more than another quirky outing. Word of mouth began to spread praising this game for its immersive and imaginative world, enthralling mystery, and stunning soundtrack.
After a brief introduction section, the game gives you everything you need and lets you explore freely. It's entirely up to you to decide which leads to follow or where to visit next. No matter how you approach this game, the result was a profound journey that far exceeded the game's modest size.
Nobody expected that a small title could be this good.
