The Lord of the Rings is more than just one of the most visually stunning movie franchises ever made. It's packed with incredible performances by a large ensemble cast, massive-scale battles and truly brilliant practical effects. It also lent itself remarkably well to video game adaptations, which is surely just what director Peter Jackson was aiming for when he signed on to make the movies.

The first tie-in game, The Fellowship of the Ring, did more than a few things right, but when the follow-up came along, it blew it entirely out of the water.

Reprising their roles from the movie were Elijah Wood (Frodo), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), John Rhys-Davis (Gimli), Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn). Mortensen not only lent his voice and likeness to the game, though. He also did extensive motion capture work to allow the developers to perfectly capture Aragorn's signature sword-swinging style of combat and his light-footed Ranger running.

Having that many Hollywood stars in one game is impressive even by today's standards, so when you consider that this title was released back in 2002, it's even more mind-blowing.
